Do I need to know anything about genealogy to start?
Short answer
No. You can start with one name and fill in dates, places and stories whenever you know them.
No. A person needs only a name to join your tree, and you can add dates, places and stories later, or not at all.
Rough dates are fine too: “about 1920” or “the 1950s” works when you are not sure. Most people start with themselves or a parent and add relatives from there.
